What is Mixed Martial Arts or Ultimate Fighting?

The sport known as Mixed Martial Arts is also called freestyle fighting, ultimate fighting, cage fighting, Vale Tudo, and no holds barred, or NHB. 

This human combat sport is a full contact sport that allows the use of various different types of fighting skills and techniques. This includes both traditional martial arts forms as well as non-traditional forms of fighting. 

Striking and punching is allowed as are take downs and wrestling or grappling. Both the hands and feet may be used for striking, and most maneuvers are allowed with the exception of hair pulling, eye gouging, strikes to the groin, and finger bending. 

Also a fighter may not be kicked in the head when they are on the ground.

The sport had its beginnings in Brazil and in 1993 was brought to the United States by the Gracie family who established the Ultimate Fighting Championship. 

While early fighting competitions were considered to dangerous for many mainstream fans, new rules were adopted to make the sport safer.

Kickboxers, wrestlers, kung fu experts and others all began to enter the sport and try their techniques against others. While some methods proved ineffective in the cage, others showed to be advantageous and thus were adopted.
